What is an OCR Reader?
The history of OCR readers
OCR applications
OCR or the Optical Character Recognition is a technology which allows a machine to automatically recognize characters through an optical mechanism. Like human beings recognize objects through the “optical mechanism” of the eye, the OCR reader “reads” the characters and then the OCR system arrives at a recognition level after several stages of different processes. The reader is the mechanism which scans the text and delivers this for the next step in the OCR process. The OCR system consists of an image scanner and the software and hardware for processing this recognition. The reader may support the “reading” of various scripts and languages It is after this reading that the processing of the recognition of the scanned text begins and ultimately the machine-editable version is presented to the user.
Early equipment had OCR readers which utilized lights, mirrors, fixed gaps for the reflected light to pass through and a moving disk with more slits. The reflected image was broken into diverse bits of black and white data and converted into electronic data. A very limited character group was recognized, which was specially designed. Today’s OCR readers are capable of scanning and reading a wide variety of documents and are used for various applications around the world. Different languages and scripts are being managed and varied uses of the OCR system are prevalent all over the world.
The sophisticated color printers and copiers nowadays are so advanced that it is often difficult to differentiate between the original and the copy. This has increased the risk of fraud by excellent copies of the original document especially in banks, the travel industry and shops. To prevent this, OCR readers and technology are increasingly being used for validation purposes. There are voucher and GIRO readers, ticket number readers, stock control readers as well as readers for passport and travel documents. Utility bill validation and check validation machines are also widely used in the banking and other industries. Now as there are diverse systems handling different scripts, fonts and languages and document in varied forms, OCR technology has created a new chapter in the way we manage, change, store and retrieve documents.

Where to find the necessary software?
C# or C-sharp is a programming language which has a variety of paradigms including functional, generic and object-oriented disciplines. The language was developed by Microsoft under its .NET framework program, and its strong programming capability can be used to design optical character recognition scripts that can recognize text from images quickly and easily. It is now possible to create SDK libraries for C# under the .NET framework to equip it with the capability to recognize text from images, under various conditions and with a high degree of efficiency.
One of the best characteristics of C# OCR is that it can recognize texts from images of very poor quality. It can also preserve the formatting and layout of the text in the source document while recognizing text from images. The process can be extremely fast, and optimized OCR engines are used to efficiently recognize text. The C# language can be manipulated to make the OCR software user-friendly, so that complex parameters need not be provided by the users. The software itself can intelligently recognize input parameters and perform tasks accordingly. OCR software can be used to recognize and extract information from image-based (bitmap, jpeg) text files and convert them into .doc, .xls or even SQL databases in C# applications.
A number of applications that can do optical character recognition within a C# .NET environment are available, but many of the better ones carry a very high price tag. However, some open source solutions are also available, and many developers are trying to customize these open source and freely available code to suit their own needs. Many of them post their scripts and solutions online, in usenets and forums and elsewhere. A good way to find the right solution for your work at a very good price is to look for such privately developed code. If you are a programmer, or are able to pay for one, you can quickly and cheaply develop the particular OCR solution that you need.
OCR converters
Optical character recognition (OCR) software helps to transform data from scanned pages or image files into editable electronic file formats so that you can edit, search and share the files. With just a few clicks of the mouse you could be completing tasks that have previously taken hours.

List the benefits of OCR conversion.
Optical character recognition (OCR) software helps to transform data from scanned pages or image files into editable electronic file formats so that you can edit, search and share the files. With just a few clicks of the mouse you could be completing tasks that have previously taken hours.
The first stage in the OCR converter process is to translate images of typed text into machine editable text. This helps in assessing the quality of the original document, its layout and formatting. Next, a detailed scanning is done by an internal processing rule known as the OCR Processing Rule Set. A specific batch of documents is read and the output text is verified. Depending on the user requirements, any of the OCR conversion levels 1, 2, or 3 can be chosen. OCR level 1 is applied to plain text documents to be scanned. OCR level 2 is applied to documents with complex layouts including data tables, flowcharts or graphics. This level is used if the layout specifications need to be retained in the output file. OCR level 3 is applied to proof read and correct any errors that occur during the OCR recognition process. This means OCR level 3 is more of a Quality Control service to ensure the scanned portions of the document are verified and the data entry is correct.
The primary advantage of using OCR converter is saving time and cost by automatically converting documents into an editable format. The character recognition rate is faster thus reducing the formatting and editing time to a great extent. The OCR converter is compatible with multi lingual documents as well. The design is such that the converter helps you to recognize text from JPEGs on your digital camera, cell phone or portable scanner. So now you can capture text even when you are on the move. The OCR converter is compatible with all Microsoft Office applications.
